Chapter 9

On 4/10 Elie was still in camp and it seemed as if he was being ignored. Three days afterwards he become sick but it was nothing serious. He is alive today and was the lone survivor of his family.
He may have escaped the concentration camps, but i think the psychological damage that they had caused to him will last forever. Along with the social damage he suffered due to the death of his family. It is as if he will be forever in that camp in some part of his mind.

Chapter 8

As Elie arrives all he wants to do is rest. Elie was surprisingly angered when his dad asked him to please let him die. Elie came into the barracks and his dad had not eaten food since he was about to die . Elie’s dad was beaten as he grew weaker and weaker. No one would help him since everyone is solipsistic in the camp. His dad was taken out and killed one night while he was asleep.
This conveys a new terror that was faced in the concentration camps, the fear that someone close to you may be near you at night but the next morning would be gone. I can only imagine how Elie handles the news of his father's death so well. He is much more mentally tough then i can every hope to be mostly because of the circumstances he was placed into.

Chapter 7

It's freezing and the group travels on a train. Elie’s dad looksdead ,but Elie was able to get him to show signs of life. The grave diggers left him alone. However 20 people were thrown off the train and left. The train continued to travel until it reached it's destination.
It must have been a scary experience not only for Elie's dad ,but Elie also because it would've meant Elie's father's life. Yet it would have meant Elie's moral support and father would be gone and he would be left alone.

Chapter 6

Elie and the group continued to march so they would not die. Elie’s father’s him from giving up. They marched 20 kilometers before stopping at an abandoned village. On the third day the left barracks were divided into two groups- the weak and those who walked well. Elie and his dad were put in the group that could walk well. They looked out for one another.
I was a big fan of this section because it was the first section of the book that i could pull a strong message out of, as if it were a parable. No matter how bad the journey or their lives had gotten, Elie and his dad were still there for each other and could motivate each other. That is like in real life when i am faced with an obstacle my parents are always there in order to keep me motivated and going.

Chapter 5

It is Rosh Hashanah, and Elie has lost his faith. As the other prisoners hold services he silently thinks to himself, why would i praise him he is allowing these evil acts to take place. He is not fasting since he didn't have enough food anyways in the camp. Slowly as the selections continue and the jews live longer in the camps they all follow in Elie's loss of faith.
This chapter was an exhibit about how the Nazi party affected the sound beliefs of people that they tortured during the holocaust. They had lost all of their humanly possesions, but that was not enough the german had to take away their beliefs which was all they had left. It showed the pschological attack that the Holocaust had on the jews along with the physical effect.

Chapter 4

In this chapter, Elie and his father are moved to another camp, where they are forced to work in a warehouse . Elie's gold crown was forcibly removed by a cruel Nazi who had authority in this camp. The camps are being cruelly treated for no reason and a young girl is hung for no reason. The other prisoners are also being punished heavily for small offenses.
This chapter is a very inhumane, yet truthful view on how the Nazi's had become power-hungry and were practically playing with the Jews. It shows the horrific attacks in the camps and how the punishments shook fellow prisoners to the core. It is an example of how in veruy poor environments people can become mad with the slightest amount of power.

Chapter 3

This chapter starts at Birkenau and the first “selections” take place. Elie and his father stay together, but get separated from his sister and mother. They are made to go to the left of Dr. Mengele. Then they see a pit where babies are being burned, and one for adults. Elie finds this unbelieveable, and is scarred by such a flaw in humanity. Everyone in the camp is scared to death by all these killings and harsh feelings toward the Jews.
This chapter was quite different from the others for the fact that it showed just exactly what was happening at the concentrations camps. There was no false hope and pleasant ideas that they would have a peaceful exsistence in the camp. This chapter gave brutal insight to the holocaust and was necessary for the story.

Colin's Night blog #2

In this short chapter of the novel the jews are loaded onto the trains and moved to the concentration camps. On this voyage the Jews seem to lose all sense of self-pride as they are trapped in a hot box with many people and little air.
During the voyage a woman who has been seperated from her husband and child begins to crack. She constantly scream FIRE, LOOK AT THE FIRE, when there is no fire to be seen. She constantly wakes everyone up with her screaming and has to be restrained several times. However at the end of the chapter she screams FIRE and she is pointing at the crematorium.
This chapter was very short, but it gave good insight to how the voyage was starting to affect the prisoner's mental states. It also did the job of explaining the hope they had for the concentration camps, which was sadly mistaken.

Night blog Chapter 1

So far in the book "Night" we have followed a young Jewish boy whose family is being affected by the Haulocost. Him, his father, mother, and three sisters live in a small Russian village that has a relatively large Jewish population.
They are warned by a man named Moishe the Beadle that the germans are cruely slaughtering the Jewish people, however his predictions are thrown aside due to the towns idealistic view that the Germans will never reach them. However they are quickly proven wrong when they forcibly enclosed into an all jewish section of the city, then moved from their section to an unknown location. As the chapter ends they are preparing to begin their journey into the unknown.
This book had a slow start that originally had me lost and i had no clue what was happening, but over the course of the first ten pages the setup was explained. The book is not particularlay interesting, but it looks at this point that it is building up deep characters and is building suspense that i believe will eventually lead to a great climax.
